Today, at least 5.4 million children globally are unnecessarily separated from their families and living in orphanages.

Approximately 80% have a living parent, and nearly all have extended family who could care for them with the right support.

We’re part of a global movement to end unnecessary family separation and ensure children grow up where they belong — in safe, loving families.

We work alongside organisations that strengthen care systems, expand family-based care, and advocate for policies that prioritise families over orphanages. Through flexible funding, sharing resources, and advocating for change, we help ensure solutions are effective, sustainable, and always centred on children’s best interests.

Martin James Foundation is a global charity and network of organisations working toward a world where children grow up and thrive in safe, loving families. This includes MJF Global, and Key Assets organisations in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, which deliver family-based care and support.

Our team brings together years of experience in international development, social work, foster care, operations, communications, advocacy, and research. We share resources and funding generated throughout the Foundation to contribute to efforts supporting children and families around the world.

Our goal is simple:
every child in a safe, loving family.

Achieving this means challenging institutional care models (such as orphanages), strengthening families, and shifting how change is funded. We trust our partners to lead this work because they know best what will be successful in their communities and countries.

Together we:

Strengthen communities and families to prevent separation

Reunite children in orphanages with their families whenever possible

Support family-based alternatives, like foster care, when necessary

To date, we’ve granted

£0.0 million

supporting transformative programmes that help children grow up in safe, loving families.

And we’re just getting started.

When people rooted in their communities have the support they need, they lead real and lasting change.

Our Partners

Together, we can end the unnecessary separation of children from their families.

Throughout our website, we refer to family-based care (FBC). This includes a range of interventions and support for children in families along the continuum of care including family strengthening as a form of prevention of unnecessary separation, gatekeeping from care and especially from institutional care, kinship care and foster care.
